I have a 64-bit Windows XP machine with 8GB of RAM memory.    It runs VM Workstation 7.  This VM Workstation hosts numerous guest operating systems including Windows XP, Windows 7 and Ubuntu Desktop 10.04

Occasionally, once or twice a week, the hard drive light would run steady and the guest operating systems would be completely locked out from mouse input and would slowly respond to keyboard input.  This could last as long as ten(10) or fifteen(15) minutes.  I have fought with the issue for months.

I made a configuration change a couple of weeks ago and I have not had the problem since.  To make this change, from the VM Workstation Edit menu, select Preferences.

I changed two things.  I did NOT allow all the remaining memory to be reserved for running virtual machines.  Some of this memory is needed for anit-virus and patch link software.

I also chose the Fit all virtual machine memory into reserved host RAM.  The screen shot below shows the settings after I made the change.
