It takes a great deal of history to produce a little literature.

When I was using Visual Studio 2005, VS2005, occasionally all the icons in the toolbox would change to be the same icon.  The icon might be a mouse pointer or a button or text box.  Even after closing Visual Studio or a reboot, all my icons remained the same graphic.

Using the toolbox became much harder.  I had to hover the mouse over an icon and wait for the tool tip to show.  After much searching, I found a reliable solution that worked every time, about 10 times, I used it.

Find the toolbox.tbd file.  It is in your Documents and Settings folder under your user name.

  • Make sure to close VS2005
  • Rename toolbox.tbd.
  • Restart VS2005.

toolbox.tbd is created automatically any time VS2005 is unable to find it.  And magically, the toolbox icons are back.

Below is my path to toolbox.tbd

C:\Documents and Settings\michaelg\Local Settings\Application Data\Microsoft\VisualStudio\8.0\toolbox.tbd
